Top 3 Treats from Austria
1. Pumpkinseed Oil from Styria
Sometimes dubbed "Austria's green gold", pumpkinseed oil is a somewhat unusual delicacy: dark green - almost black - in colour, viscous, fragrant. Nutty and aromatic, it goes well with soups, salads, and meat. More adventurous gourmets pair it with soufflés and vanilla ice cream.
2. Vorarlberg Cheese
In the westernmost region of Austria, Vorarlberg, cheese is life: More than 60 varieties of cheese are made here, using only milk from cows grazing on herbs and grass from mountain meadows. "We're all about cheese here," says cheesemaker Otto Simma, "and we're really serious about it."
In 1998, a dedicated "cheese road" was established - an association of cheesemakers, restaurants, and dairies giving visitors insights into the world of cheese through tastings and tours. Guests are able to try cheese soup and "Käsknöpfle" (a sort of cheesy pasta), served in a traditional wooden dish.
3. Apricots from the Wachau Region
Just like champagne has to come from the Champagne region of France, "Wachau apricot" is a protected name for apricots from the Austrian Wachau. This region, not far from Vienna, offers a mild climate and fertile soil, making it perfect for growing apricots. Once they ripen to their warm orange colour, they are used for a wide variety of Austrian delicacies such as jam, apricot dumplings, and pie.

The Kipferl - an Authentic Austrian Restaurant in the Middle of London
The Austrian word "Kipferl" translates to "crescent pastry" or croissant. It is a staple of Austrian breakfasts; no wonder, then, that the cosy Austrian restaurant in London's Angel chose it as its name. It's a little piece of Austria embedded in London life.
Since its start in 2003 as a small delicatessen shop, Kipferl has offered all the classics that Austrian expats and British Austria-aficionados crave. Today, it serves up a full menu including Schnitzel, Austrian sausages, Käsespätzle, and Tiroler Gröstl.
In addition, Kipferl bakes a great selection of Austrian cakes. Whether you've got a hankering for Sacher cake, apple strudel, or Linzertorte, you can order them in Kipferl's web shop for delivery to the entire UK. And while you're at it, why not add a bottle of Austrian Grüner Veltliner?
