Border Crossing on Horseback

New border crossing points since Dec 01, 2006

The following small border crossing points to Hungary have been opened for riders, cyclers and hikers.

Schattendorf, Neckenmarkt, Deutsch Schütz, Inzendorf, Mogersdorf, St. Margarethen (since Mar 01, 2007), Loipersbach and Eisenberg (since May 01, 2007).

The border crossing points can be passed with passport and horse pass at the following times:

April - October: 6am - 10pm
November - March: 7am - 7pm

Further border crossing points (closed in winter):
Andau: Apr/May/Oct: 7am - 7pm, Jun - Sep: 6am - 10pm
Mörbisch: Apr/May/Oct: 8am - 8pm, Jun - Sep: 6am - 10pm

Please keep to the opening times of the border crossing points!

Crossing of the border at a later hour is not possible, you then have to ride to the next regular border crossing point. Passport and horse pass have to be kept ready at all times!

Rules for horse traffic

Much more easier since May 01, 2004

For a border crossing with horses into a non EU member country (f.i. Hungary) very expensive laboratory tests were needed. Since May 01, 2004 when those countries became member states of the EU, things were getting much easier. Éach horse now needs its "passport", the so-called equestrian pass, which enables a clear identification of the horse.
Next to this equestrian pass, which is also needed when leaving the home stable, a veterinary certificate will also be needed, which shows that the horse does not have any signs of illness.
Blood tests will not be needed any more, which will be an enormous saving of time and money. Border crossing itself has to be done at the official border crossing points.
