In general, Austrian traffic regulations and traffic signals are similar to those in force in other European countries. Don´t drink and drive! Permissible alcohol limit 0.5 o/oo!
Seat belts must be worn and children under the age of 12 may not sit in the front seat unless a special child´s seat has been fitted. Both driver and passenger on a motorcycle must wear helmets, and the vehicle must have lights on at all times. Using a hand-held mobile phone while on the road in Austria is prohibited and fined; drivers need to take advantage of a handsfree system. Winter tires are required with snow-slippery roads. Speed limits are 50 kph in built-up areas, 100 kph outside built-up areas and 130 kph on motorways. |
