St. Margarethen is nestled in the soft-rolling hills of the Rust Hügelland. It is a typical Burgenland village with a long tradition in wine-growing. An absolute highlight of our village is the Roman quarry, which has coined the village´s character for many years now. It is one of the oldest and largest quarries of Europe important for natural and cultural history. The stone from here was used for the St. Stephen´s Cathedral and the most important buildings at the Vienna Ringstrasse street. In 1959 the first European Sculptures´ Symposium was founded in the Roman quarry. Numerous sculptures of international artists coin the landscape´s face in and around the quarry.
