The picturesque town of Hieflau lies embedded between the majestic summits of the Gesäuse, the Eisenerz Alps and the Hochschwab range. Our town has always been linked with the history of the Styrian Erzberg ore mountain. Remains of the old blast furnace and the grate in the Enns river can still be seen. Reproduced char-coal piles can be visited in the Länd area. For some 400 years they have been used to make the coal that was necessary for operating the blast furnace. A local museum gives a brief insight into these old activities.
