Surrounded by the gentle hills of the Alpine foothills and the first steep foothills of the Kalkalpen mountain range Austria's third largest lake - the Traunsee - offers something for all tastes. Swimmers will find places where they can sunbathe and swim for free in Gmunden, Altmünster, Traunkirchen and Ebensee but there are also beach resorts and even a solar-heated outdoor pool next to the lake. The four villages at the shores of Austria's deepest lake (191 m) offer state-of-the-art sports facilities. The lake is ideal for sailing as the so-called Viechtauer wind measures up to 8 on the Beaufort scale. However you can also enjoy surfing, parasailing, water skiing, rowing, diving and tube riding. And fishermen will be able to catch an endemic fish, namely the Traunsee Salvelinus.
