On the Pogusch, in what used to be considered a rural backwater, a steady stream of celebrities and bon vivants from near and far now gather to enjoy some fine dining.
The Reitbauer family, who built up a legendary reputation with their ‘Steirereck’ restaurant in Vienna, has created a culinary wonderland in their home province of Styria that is second to none. The motto could very well be: Everything here is simple—simply perfect. Because what from the outside looks like a simple, cosy mountain inn and indeed (apart from the incredible designer toilets) tries hard to preserve that impression with its interior decoration, is actually a precision-run, well-oiled operation that owes it success to the tremendous expertise and incredible hard work of the family that owns it.
Superior regional gourmet cuisine is celebrated in a rustic setting and it is this apparent contradiction that makes the Steirereck am Pogusch so popular. Most of the products used are sourced locally, such as the fresh fish from Turnau, Styrian capon (“the best chicken in the world”), game from the surrounding forests or meat from the family’s own farm. Over the years, a veritable infrastructure has grown up around the restaurant, including romantic guest rooms in nearby farmhouses that staff are pleased to recommend to visitors wishing to stay overnight. And those who are seeking a truly spectacular experience, can fly in by helicopter from Bad Vöslau (south of Vienna), just in time for a meal at the Steirereck.
