Looshaus, Payerbach

It’s like residing in an architecture museum. However the Looshaus, located just outside Vienna, enthrals not only design fans: it is also a favorite with tranquillity-seeking nature lovers as well as gourmets.

Since 1930 the famous and architecturally important Looshaus, designed by Adolf Loos, has been enthroned at an elevation of 900 meters on the Kreuzberg, near the Lower Austrian town of Payerbach. As soon as you enter the hotel, you feel as if you have been transported back in time to the year of its construction: this is how little has changed in the interior of the former holiday domicile of a wealthy Viennese mustard producer. From the lamps, the radiators, and the fittings to the wardrobes and armchairs, nearly everything is in its original state and much of it is now protected by the Office of Historic Buildings, such as the oak panelling in the study and the two-story dining room with its wrap-around gallery. It is thus no wonder that many architecture and design fans are drawn to the hotel, which can accommodate up to 24 guests.

The Looshaus, with its unique ambience and superb location, is also a favorite with sport enthusiasts, nature lovers, and weekend vacationists from nearby Vienna. However this family-run establishment is almost equally well known for its first-class cuisine and its restaurant with breathtaking panoramic views. The chef serves up seasonal specialities from the region: game from the surrounding forests, lamb and sheep cheese from a nearby farm, and trout raised locally. Wine-tasting dinners and theme nights round out the culinary offerings.
