Modern Architecture in the Alps
At first is sounds improbable: Vorarlberg - a small, mostly rural state in the middle of the Alps - has become one of Europe's leading regions for modern art and architecture.
Modern architecture in rural Vorarlberg
When it comes to modern design, Vorarlberg is a pioneer in Austria and attracting attention from all over Europe. If you travel Vorarlberg these days, you will come across substantially fewer rustic, typically alpine buildings than elsewhere. They blend in perfectly with the surrounding nature – down in the valleys and up the mountains. Often made of wood and glass, these mostly bright, lightweight structures are characterised by clear lines and sophisticated simplicity. The magazine “Wallpaper” called Vorarlberg “the most progressive part of the planet when it comes to new architecture”.
