Ars Electronica Festival
Our recommendations

What began as a pilot project has become one of the world’s most important festivals for media arts, turning the city of Linz into the “capital of the cutting edge” each September.

The “nucleus for new futures for the city” is a former tobacco factory, Austria’s first large steel-framed structure. And it is also a location with great symbolism for a festival that, following a different motto every year, devotes itself to the examination of life at the interface of art, technology and society. Over 200 individual events, designed with a great deal of imagination, idealism, and expertise, are concerned with creating scenarios for an alternative future. In its specific orientation and long-term continuity, the Ars Electronica is today a platform for digital art and media culture that is unique in the entire world. In addition to the festival, which was founded in 1979, it encompasses the Prix Ars Electronica as a scout for the newest trends in art and technology, the Ars Electronica Futurelab as a gateway to business and science, and the Museum of the Future in the new Ars Electronica Center.
