Josef Jamek was once THE winemaking pioneer of the Wachau, his wines numbered among the very first to wend their way to the zenith of fame and quality in the 1960s, when they were even served at the Arlberg wine club. Yet the best place to drink them was, and still is, his restaurant in Joching, nowadays run by the next generation, Jutta and Hans Altmann.

You enter a dignified country inn, enjoy a truly wonderful ambiente full of noble coziness. In the attractive dining rooms, on the outdoor terrace or in the idyllic dining garden, guests are invariably desirous to draw out their stay for as long as they can. Their afternoon is adorned with dishes which bespeak the traditions of the region, including fish, wild game and historic classics, e.g. lamb pluck cooked in riesling wine. It’s child’s play to add the best possible wine to each dish: the rieslings and veltliners from the house winemaking facilities are among the best the Wachau has to offer. And if you still haven’t had enough, simply reserve a room at the winery - they are lovely.
