Der Stiftskeller St. Peter in Salzburg
Our recommendations

Every year during the pre-christmas season in Salzburg’s old town, Stiftskeller St. Peter is turned into a Christmas wonderland, with 9 kilometers of light chains, 150 Christmas trees and about 8,000 Christmas tree ornaments.

The decorative tasks begin as early as mid-October, just to make sure that by mid-November all the rooms and dining nooks in Europe’s oldest restaurant (opened in 803 A.D.) will glow and radiate in celebratory splendour.

The work goes on nearly round the clock and everywhere in the house: cables are laid, wreathes braided and new decorative concepts defined and carried out. The highlight of 2009 was an 8-meter high fir tree in the grand salon of the restaurant adorned with thousands of white feathers. Equally worth seeing is the Christmas table of Swarovski crystal and the huge nativity scene which, adhering to longstanding tradition, is mounted in the spirit-warming inner courtyard, utilising the protective flank of the mountain cliffs beneath Salzburg’s fortress as a backdrop. Although the pre-Christmas Advent season already has many regular guests who wouldn’t dream of missing it, it is still is a secret tip on the tourist circuit. Nonetheless, if you would like to not merely gaze and gawk, or sip a bit of punch, but also dine at highest culinary levels, then don’t forget to reserve a table ahead of time.
