The establishment itself is legendary: opened in 1858, it was run for forty years following the Second World War by two sisters, and many of the city’s famous and less famous artists were regulars here. When the proprietor, Grete Novak, died in 1999, even the “New York Times” took note of the event by publishing an obituary.
Since then the place has been run by the young restaurateur Sebastian Laskovsky – as a traditional Viennese inn with high standards of quality. The new Gmoa, which still retains its originally rustic atmosphere, serves all the standard delicacies of Viennese cuisine: from boiled beef aspic and fried liver with mayonnaise salad to the typical “Wiener Zwiebelrostbraten” – beef sirloin smothered with fried onions. This is all prepared in the classic Viennese style and served at affordable prices. But the Gmoa menu now also includes seasonal dishes: in May asparagus is featured and in November goose dishes – traditionally served with the cloudy, fermented grape juice from that year’s harvest.
