In 2009 Joseph Haydn’s music is being heard all over Vienna: at Theater an der Wien, at the city’s most beautiful concert houses, at the House of Music, at Mozart House and at St. Michael’s Church.
The
2009 OsterKlang Festival features Riccardo Muti and the Vienna Philharmonics who will perform Haydn’s oratorio The Seven Last Words on 4 April. On the occasion of Haydn’s 200th death anniversary Wiener Akademie and Wiener Singverein will perform Haydn’s oratorio The Creation at the
Academy of Sciences. Director is Martin Haselböck. This aula (today Haydn Hall) was where Haydn celebrated his 76th birthday on 27 March 1808 with a triumphal performance of The Creation, his last public performance (29, 30, 31 May 2009).
Haydn Tunes at Belvedere (chamber concerts of the Vienna Music University) will be played on 15 and 27 May.
Haydn on the Clavier presents authentic baroque music on period instruments. Where: collection of old instruments at Kunsthistorisches Museum. When: 6 June.
Musikverein features a total of 65 Haydn concerts in 2009. Orchestras include Concentus Musicus Wien with Nikolaus Harnoncourt (
L'isola Disabitata on 6/7 June and L’infedeltà Delusa on 14/15 November), the English Baroque Soloists (The Four Seasons on 25 November and The Creation on 26 November) and Wiener Akademie, conducted by Martin Haselböck (Surprise Symphonie on 11 October).
Crossing Haydn is the motto on which Haydn is featured in concerts, films, dances and stories. Where: Gläserner Saal (24.4., 8.5., 12.6.)
Also 65 Haydn works from all genres are presented in 2009 at
Wiener Konzerthaus and include everything from oratorios (Il Ritorno di Tobia 24.5, The Seasons 6.11.) to symphonic compositions. The Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble under Marc Minkowksi will perform all twelve of Haydn’s London symphonies on four evenings. Star pianist Rudolf Buchbinder presents Haydn piano sonatas (13.5.), and Haydn à la Carte offers lunch concerts (22.4., 13.5.). The second half of the year will see some top-notch Haydn performances: Concerto Köln presents Haydn symphonies (7 and 8th Oct), RSO, directed by Bertrand de Billy, performs “The Seasons” (6th Nov), the last concert is with Belcea Quartet (11 and 12th Dec).
Mozart House in Vienna presents concerts titled “Mozart, Haydn and Contemporaries – Musical Gems and Rarities” with the Concilium musicum Vienna, the Jess-Quartett Vienna and the Esterházy Ensemble.
Haus der Musik offers Haydn Oasis Concerts with the Vienna Imperial Quartet every Saturday afternoon in June, July and August – admission is free.
The baroque
Maria Treu Cathedral, where Haydn used to play the organ, stages 25 Haydn evenings. All Haydn masses will be performed at
Augustinerkirche. The famous
Vienna Boys’ Choir will sing some of theses masses during the dominical High Mass in Hofburgkapelle. Haydn’s 69 string quartet will be performed at
Michaelerkirche where the composer worked as organist.
St. Stephen’s Cathedral, where Haydn was a choir boy, will host the “Haydn, Mozart & More” concert series, taking place from 3 June through 5 September.
In 2009 the
Vienna Haydn Association will celebrate the legacy of the musical genius with matinees at Palais Eschenbach (17th May), Haydn’s “Seven Last Words…” on Good Friday in Annakirche, and a memorial concert in Mariahilf church (28th May).
Unique musical-culinary train rides are offered by
Imperial Dinner Train. Every Wednesday from 22nd April to 7th October 2009, a train will run from Vienna to Eisenstadt – where a reception and a guided tour are held at Esterházy Palace – and back. Catering is by celebrity chef Reinhard Gerer and Palazzo.
The 2009 Haydn Year culminates with a performance of Haydn’s most famous opera,
Il Mondo della Luna, conducted by Maestro Nikolaus Harnoncourt at
Theater an der Wien from 5 December on. In Haydn’s colorful description of the moonscape there are fragrant flowers and luxuriant forests instead of stone and dust, chirping birds and brilliant arias instead of silence. (5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 22 December). Haydn’s operas will be performed in concert form:
L’Isola Disabitata on 12 July with L’Orfeo Baroque Orchestra and
L’Anima del Filosofo on 25 September with the Basel Chamber Orchestra. Haydn lovers can be looking forward to a unique New Year’s Concert by the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra conducted by Adam Fischer. The orchestra will present Haydn’s oratorio The Creation with the Arnold Schoenberg Chorus featuring Genia Kühmeier, Michael Schade and Hanno Müller-Brachmann.
