Sopron keeps alive the memories of its regular guest Joseph Haydn with concerts for music lovers from all over the world (Easter to December 2009).
On Good Friday (10 April 2009)
St. Georgenkirche is the venue of a performance of Haydn’s wonderful The Seven Last Words of our Savior on the Cross.
Haydn’s oratorio The Creation is performed on 31 May 2009 at
St. Michaeliskirche. The gothic church, which has fantastic acoustic properties, already played host to a Creation performance in 1932 on the occasion of the 1st Sopron Festival Weeks. During the Liszt Festival in summer, the church will be the venue of concerts featuring works by Haydn and Liszt, with Tamás Szekendy on the organ and Renáta Darázs as soprano (26 July 2009).
Concerts by music school students dressed in period customs are planned for 25 June and 2, 9 and 16 July 2009 at
Estherházy Palace.
The
Sopron Festival will be opened with a performance of The Creation on 19 June 2009. The concert is held on the main square, admission is free.
The city’s cultural offer is complemented by the
Europe Concert on 19 August 2009 (taking place on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the opening of the borders in 1989): a symphony by Joseph Haydn in G-Major and Beethoven’s 9th Symphony are performed in the quarry theater.
In Sopron the Haydn Year is brought to a close with the Harmony Mass on 14 December 2009 at
Liszt Center.
