Burgenland's musical highlights

Since its foundation in 1986 the Eisenstadt Haydn Festival has been upholding the legacy of Haydn and his works.

In the 2009 Haydn anniversary year the musical legacy of the great composer will be honored with a series of first-class concerts.

In line with Haydn’s famous quote “my language is understood throughout the world” the best Haydn interpreters from all over the world were invited to perform in Eisenstadt.

The 2009 Haydn Year aims at making the wonderful works of the musical genius accessible to a great audience. An extensive series of concerts will be staged at original venues to pay tribute to Haydn’s works including everything from chamber music to opera.

Opening Concert
Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the Concentus Musicus will officially open the 2009 Haydn Year on 31st March, Haydn’s birthday. Program: Haydns symphonies No. 1, No. 59 (Fire Symphony), No. 100 (Military Symphony) and No. 95.


"Religious Haydn" – Festival of Sacred Music
The festival takes place from 9 to 13 April 2009 and spotlights Joseph Haydn’s spiritual compositions. The concerts, which form part of the Easter Liturgy, are staged at original venues. The audience will be treated to the oratorios Stabat Mater and The Last Seven Words of our Savior on the Cross. The concerts are held at Bergkirche and other churches and concert halls in Eisenstadt.


"TRI-O-THLON" – Chamber Music Festival
The chamber music festival, taking place from 30 April to 3 May 2009 features performances of piano trios, baritone trios, and string trios etc. who play Haydn as well as the premiers of 18 contemporary compositions which are dedicated to Haydn. The concerts are all staged on one day and in all concert halls of Schloss Esterházy.


Haydn Memorial Days – 200th Anniversary of Joseph Haydn
A wonderful concert series, taking place from 29 May to 1 June 2009, is dedicated to the memory of this great composer who died on 31 May 200 years ago. Haydn fans can be looking forward to a concert by the Austrian-Hungarian Haydn Philharmonic Orchestra - conducted by Adam Fischer - who will perform The Creation with Anette Dasch, Thomas Quasthoff and Christoph Strehl as soloists. A Haydn Mass at Bergkirche (Haydn’s final resting place) will complement the festivities.


"Sturm & Drang" - Festival of Symphonic Works
This festival, taking place from 18 to 21 June 2009 presents Joseph Haydn as the “father of symphony”, a musical genre which he came to epitomize. The program includes, among others, Haydn’s pioneering ‘Sturm & Drang’ symphonies which will be performed by internationally acclaimed orchestras.


Open-Air Theater Performance of Haydn’s Opera "The World on the Moon"
In the 2009 Haydn Year Eisenstadt and all of Burgenland celebrate and honor the great composer. The "J:opera Jennersdorf" summer festival will pay tribute to Haydn with a performance of his opera “The World on the Moon”. This wonderful composition will be staged in one of southern Burgenland’s most romantic settings, Schloss Tabor in Neuhaus am Klausenbach, between 6 and 23 August 2009.


"Haydn: London & Paris" - International Haydn Days 2009
This annual festival focuses on the symphonies Haydn composed in London and Paris. The festival features several internationally famed orchestras who will perform orchestra works, oratorios, masses and chamber music as well as Haydn’s last opera L’anima del Filosofo. Another focus is on "Haydn and his Women".
The International Haydn Days are the centerpiece of the Haydn Festival Eisenstadt. For 21 years now this festival has been attracting countless visitors who come to Burgenland to celebrate the legacy of this wonderful composer.


12 Haydn Masses
Between March and December 2009 all 12 Haydn Masses will be performed across Eisenstadt’s churches. Many of the places are original venues where Haydn himself premiered his compositions. Eisenstadt’s seven Haydn organs are part of the program and can be visited on organized Organ Walks.


"Heaven and Haydn" Event Series at Bergkirche

  • Requiem for H (mixed choir)
    Premiere on 30 May 2009. A work commission for the 200th anniversary of Joseph Haydn.

  • "Death and Creation"
    Haydn’s The Creation is presented in a contemporary musical arrangement including a dance interpretation.

  • Haydn – Premiere of a Youth Opera
    With: Vereinigte Jugendchöre Eisenstadt, Jugendgemeinschaftsorchester. Conductor: Gerhard Krammer

    Haydn Matinees at Schloss Esterházy
    From April to October 2009 there will be 50-minute matinees alternating with chamber concerts (string quartets, piano trios, baritone trios etc.) and orchestra concerts complementing the exhibition ‘HAYDN, A PHENOMENON’.
