Berg, Werner (1904 - 1981)

The German-born painter Werner Berg was bewitched by the austere beauty of southern Carinthia, the picturesque villages and quaint farmhouses, the barren high Alpine meadows, the lusciousness of the orchards down in the valley, and the hospitality and friendliness of the people.

For these reasons the painter decided to leave Germany for Austria and take up residence at Rutharhof in Carinthia. Berg's paintings, woodcuts, drawings and watercolors are based on the German expressionism. At a first, fleeting, glimpse Berg's mainly small-format paintings seem provincial in their narrow iconographic selection and historizing in their graphicality. Berg always refused to go along with the trends demanded by the world's art marketplace.
