St. Michael im Lungau

Only an hour's drive from Salzburg, St. Martin Chalets carry the proud label as Austria's first ever ethical, environmentally friendly, energy self-sufficient holiday village. Throughout the planning and building process, care was taken to maintain the beautiful environment and, wherever possible, natural materials and traditional building methods were used. The chalets are built out of natural, untreated timber from the regions' sustainable forests, while the roofs are tiled with larch shingles and insulated with 100% pure sheep's wool. All of the construction work was carried out by people from the region.

Wherever possible, the chalets aim for zero-carbon and zero-waste. At the core of the development sits a highly efficient vegetable oil CHP unit that generates clean, green electricity and supplies all the heating. What’s more, the efficiency of the power plant is backed up by their use of sheep’s wool insulation and treble glazing. If back-up electricity is needed, the chalets use 100% certified green energy, which comes from wind, sun, water or biomass. As well as generating their own energy, St. Martin Chalets also operate a complete recycling system for all waste, which is actually required by local by-laws of the region. All waste is separated and recycled, while organic waste is deposited on the resort's compost heap and used later for the on-site vegetable gardens.

After such an impressive list of eco-friendly tributes, you would be forgiven for thinking the resort might not meet luxury standards. The chalets, however, feature all modern conveniences and accommodate between 4 and 14 people comfortably. They share access to the central facilities including a barbeque area, sauna, gym, recreation room, wine cellar, natural swimming pond and cinema, meaning guests will always have plenty to do, whether out and about in charming St. Michael or enjoying some eco-friendly luxury back on site.

    Architectural Highlights Salzburg

If cities had a taste, Salzburg would certainly be sweet. This is not only because Salzburg’s most famous delicacy, the Mozartkugel, is made of the finest nougat and marzipan. It is above all because of the fairytale charm of the Baroque city and its modern architectural counterpoints.
