Salzburg may be home to Mozart and all things baroque, but for an astounding 70% of overseas visitors The Sound of Music remains the primary reason for travel to the city.

Perhaps somewhat surprising is that many Austrians have not even seen the film and don't fully realise the enormous impact the film still holds today in the UK and North America. In Salzburg however, the word is out as nearly all city tour companies offer Sound of Music themed tours, and at select times of the year visitors can even attend a Sound of Music dinner show. Plans for a Sound of Music museum are also in the works with the Nonnberg Monastry (featured in the film) being proposed as a possible venue.

Additionally, several Salzburg hotels have set up a television channel that shows The Sound of Music around the clock so that many of Salzburg's 300,000 annual visitors can check in by watching the movie faster than you can say do-re-mi. This comes thanks to a recent initiative by the Austrian Hotel Association which is currently working towards having the channel implemented at smaller hotels and inns not yet equippped with the service.
