Graz

The reputation of being a lively, modern cultural place has earned Graz the title of Cultural Capital of Europe 2003, for the first time in Austria. This is possible through the strong cultural infra-structure of the city; however, the unique flair of the city on the Mur river has decisively contributed to the success of the Cultural Capital-Project. This is why Graz calls itself “The Cultural Capital” - and of course, due to the unique program backed by an internationally networked scene.

Aliens and so on
Graz – City of Architecture: An alien as an exhibition house, an artificial island in the Mur river. Graz has the courage for modern architecture.

No way! Graz is neither a Baroque nor a Renaissance city, neither an Art Deco nor a medieval city. The beautiful historical centre of Graz (attention: World Cultural Heritage) brings together a colourful smorgasbord of all the different styles under its roof landscape. Thus, it doesn’t matter at all that also modern architecture leaves its traces. Visionary esthetical alterations of the city panorama like the Kunsthaus-bubble designed by the British star architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier or Vito Acconci`s Island in the Mur are based on a long tradition. Architects like Domenig/Eisenköck or Szyszkowitz/Kowalski, sometimes linked together under the name Graz School of Architecture, have left their mark on the city. Courageous contrasts, individual ideas and a highly interesting scene make Graz a special architectural city with international standing.
