Kalchkendlalm – a school on the mountain

Austria’s most unusual school can be found high on a mountain pasture. Visitors can learn about the bread and butter of life in a centuries-old farmhouse.

Rauris

The school on the mountain lies in a little piece of paradise high above the mountain village of Rauris, amidst lush green meadows. From the pastures you have breathtaking views of snow-capped mountain peaks, toy town houses down in the valley, thick forests and craggy cliffs.  If you want to know where your food comes from, you can join the “bread and butter” class, which runs all year round.  You will learn to recognize and taste different grains, the bread oven - a stone built bakery in front of the main house - is lit, flour is milled, and dough is kneaded.  Visitors can shape their own loaf and as it bakes, the farm owner Roswitha Huber will show you how to milk a cow and how butter is churned.  The highlight of the lesson is of course the farmer’s platter, when you can try the tasty, home-made produce for yourself.
