The Grossglockner High Alpine Road

This famous alpine road was built between 1930 and 1935 and connects the Austrian counties Salzburg and Carinthia, leading across the main alpine ridge. Covering a distance of 48 kilometers the high mountain road goes up the mountain from Bruck at Salzachtal, passing the so-called Hochtor to Heiligenblut to the highest mountain of Austria, the Großglockner (3.798 m). As documented by pre-Celtic finds this route passing the Hochtor was already used during the Hallstatt period. With 36 hairpin turns and an altitude ascent to 2.504 meters, drivers and bikers find a special kind of nature and driving adventure. Along the toll road there are informative display lecterns, theme playgrounds and exhibitions. The Großglockner High Alpine Road is open from the beginning of May to end of October.
