Although a mere 45-minute drive from Innsbruck, the villages of Alpbach and neighbouring Reith may as well be an entire world away. Timbered housing and historic inns tell you instantly that you are somewhere wonderful, different and new, immersed in some of Europe's most beautiful villages. Marked trails lead along sparkling mountain brooks and through woods and pastures with grazing cattle. It's been this way here for hundreds of years, and why not. Surrounded by this inspiring scenery, the pace of modern life slowly ebbs away, leaving tranquility and a rare opportunity for reflection.

Quite simply, Alpbachtal is a hiker’s paradise, offering a mountain setting that would not look out of place in a picture book or fairy tale. With more than 900 km of hiking paths, all marked for ease of use, where you go and what you do is completely up to you. Just remember your boots, bag and water bottle!

During the summer months, a choice of three mountain lifts take hikers up to three very different walking areas - each offering a truly varied choice and all free with the Alpbachtal Seenland Card. The Sonnwendjoch lift in Kramsach leads to the Rofan Range, which, with its bizarre and rugged rock formations and crystal clear Lake Zirein, has established itself as a wonderful high Alpine area for hiking. Alternatively, in just five minutes, you can ride an eight-seater gondola up to the Reither Kogel walking area, which is ideal for families and ramblers alike.

Venture near the village of Alpbach and you'll come across another gondola, this time a six-seater for the intrepid walker. Take a ride and you’ll soon find yourself at around 1,900 metres at the foot of the Wiedersbergerhorn peak. Here you have two choices: either hike up to the Wiedersbergerhorn peak itself, or take a full day tour via the Sagtaler Spitzen to Inneralpbach. Whichever you choose, you are sure to be richly rewarded. Not only with views beyond imagination, but also by your proximity to Alpine wildlife. You might just glimpse a squirrel-like marmot or yellow-billed Alpine Chough.

Taking a break from walking for a day? Treat yourself to a well-deserved dip in one of Tirol’s warm bathing lakes. Lake Reintal - the largest of the Kramsach Lakes - boasts temperatures of around 25°C in the summer months, with restaurants, sun lawns and camping sites all close by.
