The southernmost state in Austria, Carinthia or "Kärnten" as it is known locally, has an unmatched beauty that has to be seen to be believed. Noted for its mountains and lakes, this is the region to go for if you prefer to take things a little easier.

Our focus is the Alpe-Adria-Trail - "hiking in the Garden of Eden" as it is often called; and with good reason. Walking around here on a bright summer’s day, you really feel like you are in paradise! In every direction, the mountainous panorama abounds and seems to stretch off forever, whilst closer by, picturesque lakes draw you in with water a beguiling shade of turquoise.

But what truly makes the Alpe-Adria-Trail so exceptional is that it allows you to take in three different countries - each boasting its own diverse and unique landscape, traditions and culinary highlights. 750 km in 43 stages, from Austria to Slovenia and on into Italy, from the foot of the majestic Grossglockner (at 4,000 metres the highest mountain in Austria) to the azure blue of the Adriatic sea.

The good news: there is no need to cover the entire Alpe-Adria-Trail all at once! The beauty of this marvellous route is the way each stage has been divided up into a manageable distance (of around 17 km or so). And here’s more good news: along the way you will enjoy a pleasant Mediterranean climate, with sunshine aplenty accompanying you on your journey south from the Alps to the Adriatic.

The first 7 stages lead through the idyllic Möll Valley, on through National Park Hohe Tauern and past Millstätter See, the second largest of the bathing lakes in Carinthia. As the gentle landscape of the Nockberge National Park rolls by, you soon enter Slovenian national territory and the Skiing World Cup venue of Kranjska Gora. Once into the Triglav National Park - in the midst of the mighty Julian Alps - you enter the domain of indigenous red deer and wood grouse, before further west the stunning Goriška Brda region takes you to the home of wine growing which is centuries old.

As your journey nears its end, the Italian border is crossed, and you head westwards into the town of Cividale del Friuli towards your final destination: Muggia. In this delightful fishing village on the shores of the Adriatic, Venetian influences will thrill you as you savour the view of the gulf of Trieste and contemplate all you have experienced on this, one of the greatest of all European walking journeys.
