Erich Stekovics Tomatoes

Frauenkirchen in Burgenland

In search of lost tastes, Erich Stekovics has collected tomato seeds from around the whole world. Nowadays, he has more than 3,200 old kinds growing on his fields near Lake Neusiedl.

Stekovics is considered to be one of the most innovative and successful farmers in the Burgenland, and his true passion is tomatoes. “A wonderful vegetable,” he notes, “it’s no wonder that it is called ‘Paradeiser’ in Austria (a shortened form of ‘Paradiesapfel’ or ‘paradise apple’).” Stekovics has the largest collection of tomatoes in the world.

The mild climate by Lake Neusiedl, Central Europe’s largest steppe lake, is ideal for tomatoes, as the sun shines 300 days out of the year there. Using unorthodox methods (Stekovics never waters the plants and does not tie them up), he is able to intensify the aromas of the tasty old varieties of tomatoes.

Immediately after being harvested, the tomatoes are processed into spaghetti sauces, jams or chutneys, which can be bought at the farm or in select delicatessen shops. From July to September, Stekovics also gives guided tours of his fields.
