Kaprun

With a striking 12th century castle as its landmark, Kaprun is set high up in the National Park Hohe Tauern, surrounded by peaks, gorges and waterfalls. The highest point, the Kitzsteinhorn at 3300m, is easily accessed by cable-car and offers spectacular 360˚ views, with year round skiing on the glacier below. There is wonderful walking in all directions and the Krimml waterfalls and Sigmund Thun Gorge are famous local attractions. The village is also excellent for cycling and offers a multitude of activities including the Tauern Spa World. There are weekly brass band concerts, torch-lit gorge walks and medieval evenings in the castle throughout July and August. Zell am See with its shops, cafés and lake cruises is just a 15 minute bus ride away.
