Arriving in Alpbachtal, you’ll immediately be enchanted by its character, for this valley, awash in wildflowers and surrounded by dramatic Alpine peaks, is stoutly proud of its ‘living traditions’. Authenticity perhaps best describes this part of western Austria. Alpbach is known as Austria's most beautiful village with its unique and traditional building style. Visitors to Alpbach experience ‘the real thing’. Here, you aren’t a tourist, you’re always a friend. Sample some hearty local fare at a family-owned farm. Perhaps some Alpbachtal haymilk cheese, a Brandenberger Prügeltorte cake, or an Alpbach beer from a one-man-brewery.
Three areas offer hiking for all abilities amid very different scenery. Reith im Alpbachtal’s gondola gets you to the family area of Reither Kogel with its circular Juppi’s Enchanted Forest walk with play areas and viewing platform. Alpbach’s own gondola takes you up to 6.200ft. Here, climbers can tackle the Wiedersbergerhorn peak, while there’s also a day-long hike across the Sagtaler Spitzen to Inneralpbach, picking blueberries and spotting marmots lazing in the sun. Next to the lift is Lauserland, a nature playground
Our tip: the Alpbachtal Seenland Card (complimentary from all accommodation providers) offers free entry and admission to many great attractions and sights, including access to five summer mountain lifts, the bathing lakes Reither Badesee and Lake Reintal, the Augustinian Museum and Museum of Tirolean farmhouses in Kramsach, use of regional bus services for the duration of your stay, guided walks and much more.
