Reach the peak and pause to take in the incredible views – the Wilder Kaiser Mountains stretching for miles and the beautiful village of Söll nestled in the valley below – and know that this is a feeling you won’t get anywhere else. Tear down the wide slopes of one of Austria’s largest ski areas, powder under your skis and a grin on your face. And when you need a break, stop at one of the cosy huts dotted over the mountain and grab a hot cup of coffee – or a cold beer if you prefer. Boarders can get their kicks at three different snow parks, where amateurs and pros alike go to show off their skills. And there’s no need to head home when the sun goes down – why not take on Austria’s longest night skiing piste or just let loose and have some fun on the four floodlit toboggan runs? If you’re an après animal, Söll is full of lively bars and clubs – just follow the sounds of live music and laughter.
Parents can hit the slopes in peace, knowing that the kids are in safe hands with childcare recommended by Crystal. At the Kiko Söll club at the gondola bottom station in Söll, childcare pros will keep little ones aged 1-4 entertained with indoor and outdoor play – and after a day of games, sledging and ski tasters, they’ll be begging to go back tomorrow. There’s also indoor childcare available at the top stations in Ellmau and Scheffau, so you can keep the kids close by wherever you want to ski.
This is one kind of school that the kids will actually want to get up for. Thirteen ski schools throughout the Wilder Kaiser region offer tuition for kids, so junior skiers can take their first slide down the mountain with the help of expert instructors. For the tiniest tots, the KinderKaiserland in Scheffau is a great choice. They look after kids aged 2-3 and give them a taste of skiing with one-hour mini courses in their enormous snow playground – perfect for little legs.
