Salzburg's dramatic new museum of modern and contemporary art, the Museum der Moderne, sits atop the sheer cliff face of the Mönchsberg, 196 feet above Salzburg’s historic old town.
Don't miss the great view of Salzburg from this amazing museum
With the opening of the Museum der Moderne Salzburg Mönchsberg in 2004, Salzburg now has an extraordinary place for presenting contemporary art. With its spectacular location in one of the most beautiful places in the world, the museum on the Mönchsberg -- designed by architects Friedrich Hoff Zwink from Munich -- represents a sensitive dovetailing of the natural/urban landscape.
Together with the original Rupertinum building in the city center , the two Museum der Moderne buildings provide around 3,000 square meters of exhibition space for thematic exhibitions of art of the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as for presentations from the collection and the Austrian Gallery of Photography. Large rotating exhibitions of international contemporary art can be appropriately displayed in the spacious exhibitions rooms.
