With its 6,000 pieces of art the Essl Collection today offers an excellent overview of Austrian painting since 1945, placing it in an international context. Whenever possible the collectors acquired a number of works by those artists that were of decisive importance for Austrian art.

The scope of the Austrian exhibits in the Collection ranges from the Abstract Expressionism of the 50s and 60s to the Vienna Actionism and New Painting of the 80s and all the way to the reductionist art of the 90s. Only a few of the numerous important artists can be mentioned here: Siegfried Anzinger, Christian Ludwig Attersee, Günter Brus, Adolf Frohner, Wolfgang Hollegha, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Kurt Kocherscheidt, Peter Kogler, Maria Lassnig, Josef Mikl, Hermann Nitsch, Walter Pichler, Arnulf Rainer, Eva Schlegel, Max Weiler, Franz West among many others.
