Birdwatchers' Paradise

At the easternmost edge of Austria, Lake Neusiedl and the Seewinkel form one of the most celebrated bird areas in Europe. Hundreds of species call the area home, and vast spring migration brings its own migration of bird lovers to the pristine region.

The stork is one the birds you'll encounter in Burgenland.

The migratory path between Europe and Africa brings some of the world's rarest birds directly through Burgenland, making Lake Neusiedl -- and nearby Neusiedler See National Park -- a mecca for birdwatchers around the globe.

Central Europe's largest steppe lake is a full 36 kilometers long and surrounded by vast reed beds and 40 saline ponds. With over 300 resident bird species, you're guaranteed excellent sightings.

Take the ferry to the beautiful wine town of Rust, where famed white storks nest atop ancient chimneys. While there, discover this gourmet village's fine restaurants and local wines. Tip: April 20-22, 2012, participate in the
Pannonian Bird Experience, a comprehensive program of field trips to all surrounding protected areas (including those in Hungary and Slovakia), plus lectures, workshops and a fair no birder will want to miss.
