Raiffeisenplatz 1, Seewalchen
Gustav Klimt (1862 – 1918) mainly known for his portrait paintings of wealthy patrons, spent many of his summer vacations between 1900 and 1916 in small towns on Lake Attersee, such as Litzlberg, Kammer and Weissenbach. Influenced by these new surroundings, he found a new appreciation for landscape painting - rather late in his career.
Klimt, apparently tired of holding up his thumb and index fingers to create a viewing point, developed his own viewing device – a rather simple frame made out of cardboard – but helpful nevertheless. This simple idea serves as the base for “KulTour with Gustav Klimt” an interactive walking tour. 24 viewpoints invite you to see the landscape the Gustav Klimt way.
There are no records that he painted any other landscapes, which shows that he was particularly smitten with the landscape of the Attersee and its surroundings.
A self guided walking tour following the footsteps of the master takes you to all 24 viewpoints. Of even greater educational value is a guided tour that takes place every Saturday in July and August: this combination of a lake cruise and a walking tour meets at 2 pm in front of the Raiffeisenbank (the local bank building) in the town of Seewalchen. The cost of the guided tour is Euro 15 (cash only). Simply contact Gabriela Hilz (hilz@attersee.at) to register.
