From Mirabell Gardens you can get a magnificent view of the fortress „Festung Hohensalzburg“, which you can reach either by walking or via the funicular from the Festungsgasse in Salzburg. Founded in 1077 the Hohensalzburg is the largest preserved medieval fortress in Central Europe which was never conquered.
The exterior may look grim but inside there are lavish state rooms such as the glittering Golden Room, the Burgmuseum – a collection of medieval art – and the Rainer’s Museum with brutish arms and armor, not far from the exquisite late-Gothic St. George Chapel. Conquer the fortress that served as a fortification and temporary residence of prince archbishops for many years. Stroll through the old masonry and take in its rich decoration: Gothic wood-carvings and ornamental paintings decorate the Golden Hall and the Golden Chamber till today.
Open to the public all year round, the fortress offers a breathtaking view over Salzburg. With its medieval rooms, romantic courtyard and bastions, the fortress provides a unique scenery for events like the Fortress Concerts and the International Artist Summer Academy.
