Explore one of the most intriguing and mystic castles in the Burgenland. The oldest parts of Lockenhaus castle were constructed around the year 1200, large parts were later added in Romanesque and Gothic styles. The castle was rumored to have been a stronghold of the Templars and includes a cult-room with astronomically interesting architectural features.
Apart from the remarkably well preserved rooms, Lockenhaus is also famous for its lively events calendar, most notably the robber baron’s meals. Feast on pork, chicken and legs of lamb in true knight’s fashion around a wooden table - no forks allowed. The Great Hall, seating 600, is the breathtaking venue of the Lockenhauser Chamber Music Festival, held July 5th to July 11th 2012. This year the festival celebrates its 31th anniversary. The setting of the castle and wonderful music makes for a great experience!

Meet Franz Liszt, Wunderkind, piano virtuoso, playboy and abbé, citizen of the world, and self-proclaimed “gypsy musician,” in the hills of Central Burgenland, Austria’s eastern-most region.
