The most important attraction in Graz? Foodies insist it's a little off the historic city center, tucked behind the Neoclassicist Opera House: The local farmers market is both a testament to local culture and a paradise for foraging gourmands. The Kaiser-Josef-Square, named for the Austrian emperor, was a timber market in eras past.

Nowadays, local farmers bring their produce here every day but Sunday, 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., and many have operations here that go back for generations. As you stroll amongst the fruits, vegetables and delicious aromas, be sure to stop for some fresh, dark farmer’s bread, homemade sausages or spreads, specialty cheeses, a famous Styrian apple or -- perhaps the greatest local delicacy -- some pumpkinseed oil. And don't miss the Schnabelweide, one of the numerous mini-restaurants surrounding the square, where all meals are cooked with ingredients fresh from the market.
