Naschmarkt Vienna

A Festival for the Senses: A Saturday morning must-do for locals, the Viennese Naschmarkt, Vienna’s largest outdoor market, attracts a crowd as diverse as the stalls and restaurants it features.

Top-chefs, culinary aficionados, moms pushing strollers, students scoring a deal, friends hanging out, antique hunters... you will find them all here all here at the Naschmarkt in Vienna. Alongside local produce, interesting spices from far away countries, the famous “Pickle & Sauerkraut Man”, the “Vinegar Man” Gegenbauer, a coffee roastery, ... it truly is a “Naschmarkt” – a “Nosh Market”.

The Naschmarkt has existed since the 16th century. Back then, mainly milk bottles were sold, but it has developed into a meeting point, a “top 10 thing to do when in Vienna”. The Flea Market on Saturday is the icing on the cake.

In and around the Naschmarkt, you find plenty of culinary adventures, both traditionally Viennese and excitingly exotic. Café Drechsler is designed by star designer Terence Conran and is considered a modern twist on the typical Vienna coffeehouse. Tewa on the Naschmarkt offers organic cuisine, Neni serves Israeli-Oriental specialties, and fish lovers get their money's worth at Umar.

Rustic country charm for city sophisticates

“Südbahn wine” is what the Viennese affectionately call their favorite weekend beverage as they take the 20-minute southbound train from the city to Gumpoldskirchen for recreational enjoyment. The main streets of the sleepy little village come to life in the late afternoon as the local wine farms fling open the doors to over 30 heuriger to invite visitors for hearty country food, full-bodied wines, and folk music.
