The tour begins on the impressive 3 acre main square which comprises one of Austria’s largest and most beautiful city plazas and market places. The pillory is ringed by the gothic City Hall and chapel and glamorous buildings from the Baroque and Biedermeier eras.

Enlargement of the cellar network took place after Emperor Friedrich II gave the citizens of the city of Retz the right to trade wine in 1458. During the highest peak of the wine trade, in the mid 18th century, an excess of 2 million liters of wine were stored in these cellars. The fascinating and entertaining 1 ½ hour multi-media tour ends in the Vinothek in Hotel Althof with a wine tasting and a selection of 130 wines from the sounding Retz vineyards.
