The Nordkettenbahn in Innsbruck.
In no other place in the world is the dividing line between an urban area and rugged mountain terrain so thin. The new Nordkettenbahnen – designed by Zaha Hadid in 2002 - now takes visitors directly from the city center of Innsbruck to high mountain terrain in just twenty minutes.
A visit to the Innsbruck Nordkette offers best panoramic views. Once you reach the 1,000-feet-high mountain station Hungerburg, enjoy the first breathtaking view of the city of Innsbruck.
The panorama is cloud-free 350 days a year. Then step onboard the cable car “Seegrube,”which takes you up even further to the 6,250-feet-high Seegrube in just a couple of minutes. And there enjoy views of the middle Inn Valley, the Stubai and Zillertal Valley Alps and the Wipptal Valley, all the way into Italy. Take a well-deserved break and enjoy lunch or dinner at the Alpenlounge Seegrube.
In order to reach the highest view point, go even further to the 7,401-feet-high Hafelekar. The highly populated Inn Valley on one side contrasts with the genuine wilderness of the Karwendel Alpine Park on the other. The visual contrasts between city and mountains make for long-lasting memories.
