The Imperial Treasury

The Treasury houses Habsburg treasures and insignia, among them the Austrian imperial crown as well as the insignia, and jewels of the Holy Roman Empire. Precious jewels such as the largest cut emerald in the world testify to the Habsburgs’ former power and glory.

Located in the medieval part of the Hofburg Palace, the Schweizerhof, the Treasury houses Habsburg treasures and insignia, among them the Austrian imperial crown, and the crown, insignia and jewels of the Holy Roman Empire. Precious jewels such as the largest cut emerald in the world testify to the Habsburgs’ former power and glory.

Other highlights are the golden cradle of Napoleon’s son and treasures of the Order of the Golden Fleece, including magnificently embroidered robes from 15th century Burgundy.

Also on display are charming pieces of jewellery once worn by Empress Elisabeth and by Habsburg empresses and princesses. Come and discover such legendary objects as the eighth-century Holy Lance, the agate bowl once regarded as the Holy Grail, or the horn of a “unicorn”.
The entrance to the Imperial Treasury is in the Schweizerhof, or Swiss Court; its name is a reminder of the Swiss Guards once stationed here.

The Treasury is located in the Schweizerhof of the Hofburg Palace and is open daily (except Tuesday) from 10am to 6pm.
