Now that the prince archbishop has retired from dwelling in this 18th century rococo castle, visitors are welcome to have a stately experience of their own here. This architectural jewel in Salzburg was used as an outside location for “The Sound of Music,” and it is also the “birthplace” of the Salzburg Festival.

Construction began in 1736 for Schloss Leopoldskron to become the family residence of Salzburg’s Prince Archbishop, Leopold Anton Freiherr von Firmian. In addition to its arch-bishopal history, the founders of the Salzburg Festival – the famous director Max Reinhart and his contemporaries - convened here when they created the concept for the world-renowned annual event.

Visitors who love “The Sound of Music” can have a view of the pond and the castle from the shore of the Leopoldskron lake where Maria and the Von Trapp children fell from their boat. The Hotel at Schloss Leopoldskron invites guests to unlock a royal experience with its castle accommodations. During a stay at the palace, guests enjoy unlimited access to browse through the massive library and ornate corridors of the estate. In the morning, treat yourself to an unforgettable breakfast in the ballroom.
