Summer after summer, Nikolaus Harnoncourt invites people to styriarte in Graz. “Old masters, newly interpreted” is the motto of the festival.
Since 1985, the Styrian festivals have made encounters with lost views of our musical heritage possible and reflected the current diversity of approaches to music from the Middle Ages and Romanticism for one month in summer. The magnificent imperial mausoleum, the country house in Graz, one of the most important Renaissance buildings north of the Alps, open-air events in Graz old town and in Eggenberg Castle are just some of the venues. In addition to the Viennese Concentus Musicus directed by Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, leading performers of the early music scene - such as Jordi Savall, Quatuor Mosaiques and Armonico Tributo Austria - are also regulars at the festival. Here, the works of great masters are fine-tuned in a concentrated and relaxed manner, and every year a curious audience gathers together in order to strike out in a new direction together.
