When a hotel advertises itself as the “most romantic hotel in the Alps”, it must have something very special to offer. And the 4-star Superior Hotel Gams in Bezau more than lives up to its claims. Instead of conventional rooms, the Gams provides its romantically-inclined guests with “Snuggling Suites”, complete with canopy beds, open fireplaces, whirlpools, and stars on the ceiling. Twenty-four of these suites are found in “Flower Castle”. Thirty more are located in the “Flower Cocoon”, which is crowned by four circular, completely glassed-in “Top of Suites”. For an experience that is no less heavenly, head downstairs to the 2,000-square-metre Da Vinci Spa, which offers not only saunas and steam baths, but also special peels, pack treatments, and baths with coconut oil, papaya, cream, honey, and chocolate. This sounds almost like a first-class menu, which the Gams, of course, also has: after all, the stringent testers from Gault Millau awarded the hotel’s own restaurant, the “Goldstück”, two toques!

A helpful hint: before beginning your feast, be sure to admire the open kitchen, situated in a former ballroom featuring elaborate stucco work, and the Wine Glass Tower, located two levels up. And if you are not in the mood for a sit-down dinner in the restaurant, why not dine in repose? At the so-called “Lying Dinner”, guests enjoy food and drink from a reclining position – naturally in the private ambience of their own suite. A few other remarkable qualities of the Hotel Gams: the fascinating architectural contrast between the original part of the building, dating from the 17th century, and the modern additions; a pink Vespa that can be booked for excursions; and the option of having your suite decorated with rose petals and candles for your arrival.
