Kloster am Spitz
Our recommendations

There are no longer monks living in this refuge, but there is a fine hotel with fabulous views, a country inn with sinfully good food, and outstanding wines that one will not soon forget.

Perhaps fried chicken and a glass of organic, eco-friendly wine may seem like strange bedfellows, but at Kloster Am Spitz, the pairing is essential to the ideal experience at this inn. The combination was made legendary by the fabled Viennese actor and writer Helmut Qualtinger and his prominent friends during their visits. What makes these simple things so exceptional? Owner Wolfgang Schwarz is committed to serving “authentic cuisine typical of Austrian country inns” – meaning each dish is prepared from the finest regional products. Locavores and visitors alike will enjoy the daily catch, which Schwarz sources from a fisherman friend who supplies him with perch, catfish, and eels. The Burgenland is well known for its distinctive terroir, and Thomas Schwarz hand-selects wines that best express the characteristics of the region.

Housed in a former monastery dating back to the 12th century, the design of the restaurant and hotel emphasizes simplicity and encourages guests to appreciate the natural beauty of the landscape. Overlooking Schwarz’s vineyards and a tranquil, panoramic view of Lake Neusiedl, the hotel offers spacious suites with glass facades on the top floor, or stylish but small rooms that are a great base camp for day trips.
