When Norbert Bischofberger heard in 2006 that the Sonne, in his hometown of Mellau, was up for sale, he did not hesitate. After all, it used to belong to his family – and as the inventor of the flu-prevention medication Tamiflu, he certainly had the necessary financial means for the renovation. The work took two years, in the process of which he had nearly the entire old part of the building pulled down and reconstructed in faithful detail.

Today this venerable, wood-shingled main building contains an outstanding gourmet restaurant, a bistro, and a walk-in wine cellar that also serves as a venue for wine tastings. The rooms and suites, as well as the wellness area, are located in the loft-like annex, which won the Vorarlberg Wood Construction Prize only a year after its completion, and which is made almost entirely of local silver fir and oak. The large wellness and spa area is also found here, featuring an outdoor sauna house and a combined indoor and outdoor pool, which is heated all year round.
