One could very well argue that Graz is the Advent capital of Austria. The entire town delights in coming together after work for roasted chestnuts and a glass of hot cider at one of the numerous Christmas Markets. During this time of year, Christmas markets are the perfect place to meet friends and shop for small Christmas presents, or souvenirs, such as Christmas tree ornaments, hand-made candles, and other trinkets. The unique scent of roasted nuts, Christmas punch, and gingerbread wafts through the air and adds to the special atmosphere.
Another attraction is the huge ice manger with life-sized figures carved from solid ice, displayed in the Italian-Renaissance courtyard of the local government building. Christmas in Graz is also the season for a concert series performed in concert halls and churches. And at the “Office for Christmas Songs,” those interested in local culture can get lyrics to traditional Christmas Carols and stories about the region.

Walking through endless rows of heavy halberds, needle sharp spears and iron armor plates in the world’s largest original armory, you can’t help but picture the mighty warriors of old sitting on their heavy war-horses in ornate armor, riding to defend their borders.
