Two hundred years ago, the Wiener Kongress - one of the most significant political summits in Europe - also helped the Viennese Waltz and Vienna’s ball culture to international fame. At the time, virtually all of Vienna was addicted to the melodies of Joseph Strauss and his contemporaries. Today, the tradition continues and the Viennese love nothing so much as dancing the night away at a glamorous ball. The Viennese Waltz is a hallmark of the city’s culture, a rite of passage for youths, and essential to a festive ball.

The most legendary institution for ballroom lessons is the Dance School of Elmayer, or, simply “Elmayer”. This particular school is synonymous with sophisticated Viennese lifestyle, and is unique in the world today. Located in the Pallavicini Palace, Elmayer was founded in 1919 by the former officer of the Austrian Imperial Army, Willy Elmayer von Vestenbrugg. During the “Golden Twenties,” Elmayer introduced his unique program that combines instruction in manners and dancing based on the traditional Austrian imperial system. Today, visitors to Vienna can drop in for private or group lessons, both available in English. Bring along a nicely polished pair of shoes with smooth soles, and you’ll be all set to spin around Elmayer’s dance floor in three-quarter time.

„Waltz in Vienna“ is another dance school that caters specifically to international travelers and their busy schedules. The school offers private lessons for singles and couples in several imperial locations in Vienna. Whether you are just curious to find out what the Viennese Waltz is all about, or would like to prepare for a magical evening at one of Vienna’s celebrated balls, Waltz in Vienna will ensure you have a fun and memorable experience.
