Step into a time machine and journey to an age when the comforts of technology didn’t exist. Explore the complexities of rural Austrian life as you tour reconstructed homes and watch artisans hard at work on their trade. Wander through 50 hectares of land, five centuries of history, and enjoy a few surprises along the way.
The Open Air Museum Grossgmain is an enlightening experience for the entire family. Every year, the museum’s collection of artifacts expands as more buildings are transported from their original location and re-erected piece-by-piece. Observe the evolution of architecture over time as you tour houses dating from the 16th century up to the 20th century. Roam through the rooms of farmhouses, stables, mills, homes, and Alpine huts that have been decorated meticulously to appear as though they are still in use. Witness firsthand the difficulty of an Austrian farmer’s daily toil without modern machinery, and examine all of the tools required for the strenuous task of doing laundry.
Don’t worry - this museum isn’t all work and no play! To explore the exhibits, hike the paths between different sites, or hop on the narrow-gauge railway for a fun ride with the family. In the Flachgau section, kids can visit a candy shop and parents can enjoy a brew and bite to eat at the Salettl. Additionally, picnic tables are scattered throughout the sites to make taking a break easy.
