The Burgenländer love Blaufränkisch and so will you, we promise.

The Burgenland region is Austria‘s red wine capital and home to the Blaufränkisch. This grape variety can be found all over Burgenland and is the most-planted red wine grape in this most-eastern region just an hour south of Vienna.

The typical bouquet of this late-ripening variety is deep aromas of fine spices backed by blackberry and cherry aromas with tones of liquorices. The taste profile is focused and lively, with its characteristic high acidity. Look for the “‘Red Wine Trail”,‘ which starts in the village of Horitschon and pay a visit to some of Austria‘s finest winemakers such as Heinrich, Gesellmann, Kirnbauer and Igler in Deutschkreutz or winery Bayer in Neckenmarkt , just to mention a few. Make sure you don’t miss the winemakers collective Arachon in Horitschon featuring not only intriguing wines but also the regions modern-day wine architecture. All that said, Blaufränkisch is a very tasty, lighter drinking red whose firm tannins make it worthy of aging. It pairs great with BBQ or some of the local pork specialties.
