Telephone
It may be worth your while to buy a phone card (Telefon-Wertkarte) for €3.60 or €6.90 at a post office and make your calls from a card-operated pay phone as most hotels apply high surcharges. Calls are cheapest between 8pm and 6am.
To dial internationally from Austria you must dial 00 first. For example 00 61 for Australia and 00 64 for New Zealand. Austria’s international dialling prefix is 43. For example 0011 43 from Australia or New Zealand. When dialling out of or in to Austria the 0 on the respective local number must be dropped.
Mobile Phones
Most Austrians own a mobile phone (Handy) and they are by far the most popular means of telecommunication. Austrian mobile phone numbers begin with a 4-digit prefix starting with 06, followed by a further 7 or 8 digits.
