Kunsthaus Graz

For a long time the Clocktower was the landmark of Graz. Now the city has a new architectural mark: the Kunsthaus Graz or “Friendly Alien”.

Kunsthaus Graz, designed by the London architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, has an organic shape with a skin made of 1066 iridescent blue acrylic panels. At night, the building, which is located on the right shores of the Mur, glows by way of a computerized lighting system beneath the transparent skin. Daylight enters the building through large, tube like "nozzles" for windows. Needel is the name of a vista platform linking Kunsthaus and Eisernes Haus.

The “Eisernes Haus” accommodates a shop, the administrative offices and Camera Austria, an institution dedicated to photography. Camera Austria has been organizing exhibition since 1975; since October 2003 the exhibitions of contemporary photography are staged at Kunsthaus Graz.

The “Medien.Kunstlabor” (Media Art Lab) at Kunsthaus Graz specializes in new media. It is workplace and a venue for events and communication at the same time.
